Search
To search, use the "Search" box at the top righthand side of every page.
Searching is very easy, but to get the most from the advanced features, you may want to consider these tips:
Use precise search words
The more descriptive your search words are, the better your search results will be. For example, when searching for information about trustee recruitment, enter the search term "trustee recruitment", rather than "trustee" or "recruitment".
Check your spelling
The NCVO website cannot (yet) spot your typos for you!
Avoid common words
Commonly used words, such as "a", it", "and", "the", "by", "at", and "of", are ignored by the search tool. Accordingly, you do not need to use these words.
Capitalization and punctuation are not necessary
For example, when searching for information about revitalising the English Regions, just enter "revitalising english regions".
Word order does not matter
For example, searching for "revitalising english regions" and "regions english revitalising" should produce the same results.
Leaving a space between words is important
If you are unsure if there is a space between the words, try your search both ways.
No need for Boolean
It is not necessary to use Boolean terms, such as "and", "or", and "not".
Just the words
It is not necessary to phrase your search in the form of a question. For example, you do not need to enter "Where can I find information about revitalising English regions?". Instead, just enter "revitalising english regions".
Ignore plurals
You do not need to decide between using different forms of the same word, such as plurals. For example, entering "region" also searches for "regions".
Be as specific as you can
Of course, if you get few or no results, try making your search more general.
Try using synonyms
If the search term you entered produces few results, try using a synonym or more common term that means the same. For example, instead of searching for "director development", try "trustee development".
Finally...

Accessibility
The NCVO website is designed with the goal of accessibility without compromising usability.
This document explains a number of features which can help you navigate the NCVO website. We really welcome feedback from people making use of these features. You can send feedback by using the feedback form at the bottom of is this page: Was this page useful? Yes No.
We have recently (February 2007) relaunched the website - as a consequence there may be some pages or features which don't look or work quite right - if you come across anything like this, please do let us know.
Acronyms and abbreviations
The first instance of any acronym or abbreviation on a page should be tagged with its explanation or expansion (where this doesn't follow immediately in the text). Hovering your pointer over a 'tagged' acronym or abbreviation may show you its expansion; however, behaviour varies between user agents (browsers).
Tables
Tables are only used for tabular data - not for cute layouts.
All tables should have captions and summary text. Whether summary text is shown depends on your user agent (browser).
All rows and columns should have marked headers.
Images
Any information conveyed graphically has a text equivalent. All images and icons have 'alt text'.

How to print a document
This site uses media-relative stylesheets - this means that when you print a page, it is automatically reformatted to suit the printed page. The pages are designed to be printer friendly. This is why there are no links to 'printer-friendly' pages: all this is taken care of automatically.
